Excessive Feet Sweating
 |
Plantar Hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating of the feet, usually occurs in conjunction with hand
excessive sweating as a result of an overactive sympathetic nervous system. People with Plantar
Hyperhidrosis complain of bad foot odor, problems with athlete’s foot, blisters, infection and
rotting of socks.
Most of the patients who have excessive sweaty hands will also have excessive sweaty feet.
Even though it is not as severe as hand sweating, functionally or socially it still poses a problem.
Shoes can be ruined, sandals cannot be worn, and foot odor and fungal infection can become problematic.
When Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) is performed to alleviate hand sweating, the results for foot sweating vary.
Some patients will experience reduction or cessation of foot sweating and some may see lesser results.
About 60% to 70% of the patients who suffer from excessive foot sweating will see improvement after
the procedure is performed. Other local modalities such as the Drysol lotion, or Iontophoresis can offer
some help, although limited and temporary.
Isolated plantar sweating can be helped by lumbar sympathectomy,
which destroys the ganglion controlling the sweat glands on the feet. This operation is much less common than
the ETS described above, and it is not recommended for males as it could result in impotence.
